About the course

The QA Level 4 Award in Immediate Life Support (ILS) is a nationally recognised qualification for people who need to provide emergency care to patients as part of their job.

This includes:

  • event medical providers
  • emergency ambulance staff
  • registered healthcare professionals
  • people in specialist roles within the emergency services and military

The course teaches you how to provide immediate life support to patients who are in cardiorespiratory arrest or have a life-threatening illness or injury.

What's covered in the course?

The ILS course covers:

  • scene management: methods and procedures for assessing and managing an incident
  • patient care: managing patients with life-threatening or non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries
  • airway management
  • immediate life support procedures:
    • return of spontaneous circulation (RoSC)
    • patient handovers
  • modifications during cardiac arrestfor:
    • third trimester pregnancy
    • neck stoma
  • immediate life support treatment algorithm
  • end of life care
  • using the National Early Warning Score (NEWS)
